(NHL) Here’s everything you need to know about the NHL Expansion Draft… For the first time in 17 years, the NHL will hold an expansion draft.

The 2017 NHL Expansion Draft will fill the roster of the Las Vegas Golden Knights, the league’s first expansion team since the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Minnesota Wild joined in 2000.

Each of the 30 NHL teams will lose one player in the draft, which means there will be lots of intrigue to see who Vegas steals from your favorite team.
Here’s everything you need to know about the NHL Expansion Draft.

When is the NHL Expansion Draft?

All 30 other NHL teams must submit their list of protected players by 5 p.m. ET June 17. Las Vegas will then make its selections by 10 a.m. ET June 21. The league will then announce the results on June 21 during the NHL Awards ceremony.

The exact time of the announcement has not been released; however, the awards ceremony will begin at 8 p.m.

NHL Expansion Draft rules

NHL teams must protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie; or eight skaters and one goalie.

Any player with a no-movement clause in his contract must be protected. However, the player can waive it.

All first- and second-year players and unsigned draft picks cannot be selected by Vegas.

The NHL Expansion Draft results will be revealed on NBC Sports Network in the U.S. and on Sportsnet in Canada.

When will Las Vegas pick in the 2017 NHL Draft?

The Las Vegas Golden Knights will pick sixth in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. The New Jersey Devils will pick No. 1 after winning the NHL Draft Lottery.

When can Las Vegas start making trades or sign players?

On March 1, the Golden Knights were allowed to begin making trades and signing free agents for next season. While Vegas doesn’t have much to work with, that really meant that general manager George McPhee could start looking to acquire draft picks in exchange for not pursuing or taking certain players in the expansion draft.

On June 22, the Expansion Draft Signing Moratorium and Trade/Waiver Freeze for the rest of the NHL will be lifted at 8 a.m. ET.
